Srinagar, Jan 22: In June 2007, a seven year old girl Sushma Verma from Uttar Pradesh created history when she became the youngest student to pass the Class 10 examination. She broke Tathagat Avatar Tulsi’s record, who had earlier cleared the examination at the age of nine in Bihar.
The child prodigies would have never come to limelight had they been born in Jammu and Kashmir where state’s peculiar rule bars students from appearing in secondary school exams if they are not above 14 years of age. In such a scenario, Verma would have to wait a full seven years before she could have become eligible for matriculation.
The Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education regulations clearly state that the secondary school examination shall be open to a pupil who has attained the age of 14 years.
Thousands of students and their parents are aghast at the archival rule that sets limit to what a minor can achieve.
The age limit criterion affects the competitive exams too. “My daughter cleared the Class 10 examination at the age of 14 and Class 12 at 16. Now when she has to appear in common entrance test 2015, the rule states that her minimum age should be 17 + by December 2014,” said Ali Muhammad Salroo. “She will have to waste one full year.”Read more
